ARD Radio Play Days 2013

Sound at its finest: The ARD Radio Play editorial staff and Deutschlandradio present the newest from the world of storytelling. This wide-ranging program offers radio-play fans concerts, guided-tours, workshops and lectures to young and old. Together with the its partners SWR2, hr2-Kultur and the ZKM, the HfG | Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, has organized an international symposium on Radio Art entitled “Choreography of Sound − Between Abstraction and Narration”. Here, the acoustic dimensions in art are plumbed.

The highlight for the young listeners this year is the Children's Radio Play Day, scheduled to take place on Sunday, November 10, 2013: The best play of the competition German Radio Play Award will also be presented in addition to the live radio play “Räuber Hotzenplotz [The Robber Hotzenplotz]” and fascinating workshops.

For adult radio play fans the largest German-speaking event on the subject of radio play and sound art provides an abundance for the ears: for example, a Francis Durbridge evening with “Bastian Pastewka und der Fall Temple [Bastian Pastewka and the Case Temple]”, or “Who killed Mr. Moonlight?”, a DJ performance by DJ Zipo, or a live radio play as "Public Recording Session" by Robert Wilson. An additional highlight is an experimental and harmonious concert by Hauschka, actually Volker Bertelmann, who uses the most diverse kinds of objects for his music − from leather and marbles through to hammers wrapped in aluminum foil.

An international symposium on the acoustic dimension in the arts is scheduled to take place from Tuesday−Thursday, 5−7 November, 2013. Artists, sound poets, composers and performance artists provide insights into their work on the “Choreography of Sound − Between Abstraction and Narration”, and will be present in person for questions.
The event is free of charge, though registration is requested by Thursday, October 31, 2013 at info@cosound.de.

For further information on the symposium, please see: www.cosound.de/en

The international symposium “Choreography of Sound − Between Abstraction and Narration” is co-organized by the HfG | Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design in collaboration with SWR2, hr2-Kultur and the ZKM, and sponsored by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes.

Look forward to a colorful program for young and old, when the ARD Radio Play Day will be at the ZKM and the HfG in Karlsruhe as special guests for five days!

You can find the entire program here.

The ARD Radio Play Days 2013 at the ZKM and HfG is scheduled to take place in collaboration with the City of Karlsruhe.

Workshops for Children and Youth at the Children’s Radio Play Day
(Sun, November 10, 2013)

10 a.m.−5 p.m. Colorfully Paint your Bag
Open Painting Workshop
Hotzenplotz, Zwackelmann, Fairy Amaryllis, Punch or Seppel − everyone needs a bag sometimes for transporting his or her belongings. What do you think it should look like? If you already know, then paint your own robber’s, magician’s or a fairy’s bag: Or have you heard other exiting stories, which you would like to paint? If you do, then you are at the right place. Naturally, you can take the bag home with you after the workshop.
From five years-old upwards
Location: ZKM_Music Balcony

10.30 a.m.−1 p.m. and 2.30 p.m.−5 p.m. Music with the Gameboy for Girls & Boys
Music is an important part of a radio play. Would you like to compose a short piece of music for your favorite story? To make music all you need is two thumbs and five buttons – nothing more! With the help of a Gameboy and a playful music program, we can make beats that can be worked on at home after the workshop.
From nine year-olds upwards
Location: ZKM_Media Workshop (2nd floor)
The number of participants is limited, registration on location

11 a.m.−5 p.m. Ghost Organ from the Horror Film − Building your own Theremin
The theremin is a synthesizer, which registers changes in the electromagnetic field and transforms them into sounds. A small thermin is built with a soldering iron and tin solder, and from electronic elements. If we move our hands through the air close to the theremin antennae, sounds are produced as if from the hands of ghosts.
Registration is not required; a total of eight children can build and operate a thermin at the same time.
From 10 years-old on
Location: ZKM_Music Balcony
Limited number of participants; registration is not required.
