Data Protection Policy
I. Responsibility and Scope
ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe is the Service Provider and responsible entity for personal data of users stored in visitation to the ZKM Website (hereafter the “Website” or “Websites”). All personal data are collected, processed and used in accordance with legal regulations, especially the German Data Protection Act (Bundesdatenschutzgesetz) and the German Broadcast Media Act (Telemediengesetz).
This Data Protection Policy applies only to the Website or Websites under the domain www.zkm.de (incl. their subdomains). The policy specifically does not cover foreign websites by other service providers to which a link is given on the Website.
Should users give personal data of third parties on our Website (i.e. names provided in entries), the user himself is legally responsible for the content and subject to data protection laws. At the request of an affected party, we shall immediately remove such content from the Website.
ZKM Data Protection Policy is subject to regular changes on the condition of, among other events, possible changes through the use of so-called “Social Plugins”. The Data Protection Policy, which can be accessed on the Website, applies upon your visit to the Websites.
II. Automatically Processed Personal Data
Upon accessing our Websites, the following information from your browser is automatically communicated to and stored on our server:
- Date and time of access;
- Host name of the accessing computer (IP address);
- Referrer-URL (website accessed immediately prior);
- User’s browser type and version;
- User’s operating system;
- Pages called up by the user;
- Search terms for which the Website was found, for example through Google.
These data are used by ZKM solely for the purposes of data protection, statistical evaluation, and design requirements for the Website. ZKM does not undertake the attribution of these data to real, specified or determinable persons, nor does ZKM contract third parties to do so. ZKM likewise does not create user profiles.
So-called “Cookies” are used on the Website to assign to you an anonymous user-ID. Cookies are small text-data that are stored on the user’s computer upon calling up a website. Cookies serve to make the visit to websites more comfortable, efficient, and secure. As purely textual data, Cookies cannot contain viruses or other malware. Most browsers offer the option to show a warning before Cookies are stored, to refuse storage of Cookies, or to remove them after use. The usage of the Website can, however, be limited through these settings.
Usage of Google Analytics
Google uses the compiled data to analyze your usage of the Website in order to compile reports about Website activities and to provide services to the Website Owner regarding further Website and Internet usage. Google will communicate this information to third parties, in so far as it is legal and Google has contracted such parties to process the data. In no case shall Google put your IP-address into contact with other data from Google.
You can prevent the storing of Cookies through an appropriate setting in your browser software; we advise in this case that the full functioning of the Website could be compromised as a result. By using the Website, you thereby agree to the processing of data about you collected by Google in such a way as described above and to the goal behind the data collection. You may refuse the future collection of data by Google Analytics especially by installing a “Deactivation Add-On” (https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout?hl=en) for your browser.
Utilization of AWStats
www.zkm.de and other subdomains of our domain zkm.de use Webstatistiktool AWStats. Data such as listed in the above, which are transmitted to us by your browser, are automatically saved in the server statistics. As a rule, such data are not attributable to certain persons. A consolidation of these data with other sources of data will not be carried out and, furthermore, the data will be deleted following statistical evaluation.
Usage of Facebook Plugins
The Website integrates so-called Plugins of the social network facebook.com (hereafter “Facebook”). Facebook is an enterprise of Facebook Inc., 1601 S. California Ave, Palo Alto, CA 94304, USA. A list of such Facebook Plugins and their optical representations are shown on the following Internet address: http://developers.facebook.com/plugins .
Each time one of our Plugin-equipped Internet Websites is accessed, the Plugin causes the browser that you are using to upload the optical representation from the Facebook server. We have no influence over, and also no exact knowledge about, the amount of data that Facebook collects using Plugins and we can only provide information according to our level of knowledge:
Through the usage of Plugins, the Facebook server is immediately given information at the point of your access to our Website (and not first when the Plugin is accessed), about which pages of our Internet Websites you are visiting. If you are a member of, and you are logged into, Facebook during your visit to our Internet Websites, Facebook recognizes which particular Website among our Websites you are visiting and maps this to your personal user account on Facebook. If you activate one of the Plugins, this is likewise sent to your personal Facebook user account and mapped and stored there. Also if you are not a member of Facebook, there is still a possibility that Facebook will store or use your IP-address.

Use of the Google “+1”command button
Our Website uses the “+1” command button of the social network Google Plus, which is operated by Google Inc. Every time a website that contains such a command button is accessed, the “+1” button creates a direct link to the Google servers, downloading and showing the command button. We do not have any influence on the amount of data that Google collects through the command button. According to Google, if one does not click on the “+1” command button, no personal data is collected. If you click on the “+1” button while logged in to Google Plus, Google collects the URL that you have recommended, your IP-address, and other browser-related information, in order to save your recommendation and allow Google to publish it.
If you are a member of Google Plus and do not want Google to collect personal data and data regarding your Internet surfing behavior on our Website and if you are connected to your stored member data, you may log out from Google Plus before entering the ZKM Website. Usage of the Twitter button
Our Website also uses the command button of the Twitter service, operated by Twitter Inc., 795 Folsom St., Suite 600, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA. This command button allows a page or an individual entry on our Websites to be communicated on Twitter or for us to be followed on Twitter.
When you visit one of our Website pages that is equipped with such a button, your browser creates a direct link to the Twitter servers. The contents of the Twitter button is communicated directly from Twitter to your browser. We have no influence over, and also no exact knowledge about, the data that Twitter collects and communicates, or how they are used by Twitter, yet we assume that the data processing is similar to that of other social networks such as Facebook. III. Volunteering Personal Data
The disclosure of your personal data is not required for visiting our Website. Should you, in fact, disclose such data voluntarily as part of an online formula, for example, or when ordering our Newsletters, the ZKM may utilize such information for answering enquiries or for dispatching the Newsletters only and, furthermore, in compliance with the provisions stipulated by data protection laws. You may revoke your consent to the storage and use of personal data, and, in particular, your email address used for the dispatch of the Newsletters by simply notifying us (per email, fax or letter), or by unsubscribing the Newsletter by way of activating a link included in every dispatch thereof. In such cases, the ZKM will immediately delete your personal data.
We do not give personal data to third parties unless there has been explicit agreement to disseminate information, or there is a legal obligation to provide data. To the extent that you have agreed to dissemination of your data, you can also revoke agreement at any time through simple notification (by e-mail, fax or letter).
