The art fair, art KARLSRUHE will be celebrating its ten-year anniversary in 2013. More than 200 galleries from thirteen countries will present painting, sculptures, objects, graphics, as well as the photography of classical modernity and the contemporary period. This year the ZKM | Karlsruhe will also be represented by a stand in Hall 1 for the anniversary event with additional exhibition spaces. By way of select works, visitors will acquire insights into the current exhibitions, as well as upcoming ZKM highlights.
At the art KARLSRUHE, the ZKM presents a group of five sculptures by German artist Otto Piene, which have never before been presented in this particular constellation. Born in 1928, Otto Piene is considered among the most important pioneers of a kinetic, multimedia based art. The retrospective “Energy Felds. In Celebration of Otto Piene’s 85th Birthday” can be viewed until April 1, 2013 at the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art.
Furthermore, a video documentation of the current exhibition “Move on Asia. Video Art in Asia 2002 to 2012” at the ZKM | Media Museum provides impressions of the most recent work in this medium in thirteen countries throughout Asia. Although, until the turn of the century, video as a genre of art was always attributed to the Western Hemisphere – in spite of the fact that some of its most important representatives stemmed from Asia – over the last two decades independent video cultures have emerged in countries throughout Asia, that have discovered a global public in the flourishing biennales and art fairs of the region.
With a special exhibition, the ZKM welcomes back internationally celebrated choreographer and native of Karlsruhe, Sasha Waltz, to her home city from September 28, 2013. Filmic examples of her choreographic works ensure an initial insight into the exhibition “Sasha Waltz. Installations Objects Performances”.
Behind the work “Ceci n’est pas un mur vide (This is not an Empty Area)”, presented on the wall of Hall 1, – as the name suggests – conceals more than what visitors can recognize at a first glance. With the aid of an iPad, the empty wall on which only irregular black squares can be seen becomes the exhibition surface: seen through the mobile device, expansive works of art emerge that may be viewed in the exhibition “ARTandPRESS, Art. Truth. Reality”. Peter Weibel and Bernd Lintermann developed the Augmented Reality Installation at the 10th art KARLSRUHE.
