Beijing Bicycle by Wang Xiaoshuai (China/France, 2000, 113 min)
In the film, sixteen-year-old Guei comes to Peking to realize his dreams. First, he works
as a bicycle courier, but then his bike is stolen. Guei walks through Peking,
searching for his bike. The jury of the Berlinale 2001 awarded the film the
Silver Bear and the Großer Preis.
Suzhou River by Lou Ye (China/Germany,
2000, 83 min)
An alter-ego of the director Lou Ye leads us through Shanghai
with a hand-held camera. In a night club he finds the story of his life,
as told by the camera.
There’s a strong wind in Beijing by
Ju An Qi (China, 2000, 48 min) Peking, 1999
A city and a nation in motion,
everything focuses on the new millennium and the preparations for the fiftieth
birthday of the founding of the new republic.… Ju An Qi breaks with
the conventions of Chinese film. He turns uninhibitedly to the workers and
residents of Beijing out on the street, in public squares, schools, restaurants,
beauty salons, and public swimming pools with a simple question—the
wind conditions in the city, thereby eliciting bizarre but meaningful answers.
