Handicapped Accessibility and Unhindered Access to the ZKM

    [→ Information auf Deutsch]

Unhindered access to the museums and all other areas open to the public was an important part of the plans for converting the former munitions factory into a cultural facility. As a result, the ZKM has been adapted to the needs of the disabled since its opening.

Access to museums
The main building, with its foyer, the entrances to the museums, wardrobe, Museum Shop, Media Theater and restaurant, may be reached without having to make use of stairs.

The doors are constructed to offer sufficient width; steps and landings are leveled.

At the entrance of the Lorenzstraße there are three parking places marked for handicapped people. Other parking places may be found in the underground car park, from which a lift ascends directly to the main entrance.

All the floors of all the museums, the entrances to the library, Mediathek and Cube, may be reached comfortably by lifts.

In the museums and the Foyer, there are toilets with alarm systems and specially equipped for handicapped people.

For older people who normally do not need a wheel-chair but require help in walking, wheel-chairs are available on loan.

Tours and workshops
The ZKM | Museum Communication is staffed with specially trained tour guides and offers upon request tours for handicapped people. An average of 10 to 20 such special tours take place annually for the physically handicapped, the mentally handicapped, blind people and people with other handicaps. These tours can be booked at short notice. For further information and booking, please get in touch with Mrs. Marianne Spencer: Mo−Fri, 9 a.m.−1 p.m., additionally Tue 2−4 p.m.; Tel. ++49(0)721-8100-1990, E-mail: fuehrungenzkm.de
