Now that the operating system Linux has been operating for years in the server field, and is increasingly finding application in the office field, also in the area of audio it continues to mature into a platform that must be taken seriously: it now offers the user a wealth of diverse applications. The sound architecture ALSA supports professional sound cards and is meanwhile considered standard equipment for every current Linux system. Ardour, one of the most ambitious software projects in the Linux audio field, is about to release its first official version.

For the third time now, the International Linux Audio Conference is being held at ZKM. It again offers developers and users of Linux and Open Source Audio Software a forum for the exchange of information, for discussing projects, and for presenting music. Well-known software developers from the entire world report on their projects in the course of the symposium.

The lecture program includes contributions to themes such as hard disc recording, MIDI sequencing, software synthesis, interface design, spatialization and Linux audio distribution and also addresses questions of the licensing of free software and free music. This year’s opening speaker is Fernando Pablo Lopez-Lezcano of the renown CCRMA - »Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics« at Stanford University [USA]. Furthermore, Paul Davis [USA], the chief developer of Ardour, will attend and offer an introduction to the software.

Unless otherwise indicated, lectures will be in English.
