Organised by the ZKM in cooperation with Revolver - Archiv für aktuelle Kunst
From 1933 to 1939, Adolf Hitler gave a series of programmatic speeches on art and cultural policy at the opening of exhibitions in the Haus der Deutschen Kunst in Munich and at meetings on cultural matters convened during the Nuremberg party conferences. A compact collection of these so-called speeches on culture was published in October 2004 by Revolver - Archiv für aktuelle Kunst in its series entitled Kunst Propaganda Dokumente [Art Propaganda Documents]*. Boris Groys demonstrates in his introductory essay Das Kunstwerk Rasse [Race as a Work of Art] that the real work of art in the Third Reich was to be the recipient of art. The theory of race thus constitutes the innermost core of Hitlerís discourse on art, the characteristic feature of which is a paradoxical dual approach: the exploitation of art for political purposes (art as propaganda) and - primarily and little heeded so far - the exploitation of politics for the purposes of art (art as the telos of politics). At this one-day symposium the key concepts of Hitlerís Ďtheory of artí will be presented followed by a discussion of how the powerful historical impact of these speeches can be explained.
In connection with the symposium the ZKM will be presenting for the first time the surviving film and sound recordings of the speeches as well as the colour film by H. Feierabend on the Day of German Art in Munich in 1939. This audio and video material will be available to participants and visitors from 15.00 outside the Media Theatre.
