ZKM_Mediathek | audio collection

The purpose of the International Digital ElectroAcoustic Music Archive (IDEAMA) is to collect, digitally preserve and disseminate internationally reknowned electroacoustic music composed since inception of the medium to the present day. IDEAMA started as a collaborative effort between two founding institutions, Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM) in Karlsruhe, Germany and Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), USA.

In addition to the collection, preservation and dissemination of electroacoustic music, IDEAMA's goals include cataloging and documenting the entire repertoire of the genre.

An initial target collection of early electroacoustic works and auxiliary materials was first established by the founding institutions, to which more recently composed electroacoustic music will be later added. IDEAMA will store all materials entirely in digital form. Recordings, scores, and other auxiliary materials will be publicly accessible in compliance with the rights of their composers/publishers. IDEAMA materials are non-circulating.

In addition to the founding institutions, other institutions participate in IDEAMA activities. These institutions can be branches of IDEAMA (Partner or Affiliate Institutions) and will function according to the definition of their branch designation.

The purpose of this memorandum is to define the roles, responsibilities and rights of institutions which together comprise IDEAMA, and to make clear the working relationship between those institutions.

A. Founding Institutions
The founding institutions, Stanford University´s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustic (CCRMA) and ZKM, have been actively engaged in research and development of IDEAMA. A Steering Committee comprised of individuals from each founding institution implemented all technological aspects of IDEAMA's development and made decisions on all issues concerning creation of the catalog database, the user interface, all digital storage and playback media, the computer platform for research, and continuing development of the archive. Founding institutions will set forth overall IDEAMA policy. They also researched all legal questions regarding international copyright law.

Founding institutions created the basic target collection of early electroacoustic music and continue to augment the collection with more recently composed works. The sources of the collection´s contents are named in the catalog database. Each founding institution had a selection committee to help identify and locate materials appropriate for inclusion in the archives. Together, the founding institutions also created an overall international advisory board which includes individuals who have made significant contributions to the field.

Each founding institution had specific regional responsibilities: IDEAMA at Stanford University was concerned with the electroacoustic music of North and South America, Asia and Australia; IDEAMA at ZKM was responsible for all European electroacoustic music. Both founding institutions subsequently combined their materials to form the target collection.

The founding institutions will provide IDEAMA branch institutions with the basic target collection for a minimal service fee. The founding institutions will regularly inform the IDEAMA branch institutions as to all significant developments.

All duplication and distribution of materials will be performed by the founding institution ZKM Karlsruhe for scholarly purposes only, unless special circumstances arise, requests for which will be handled on a case by case basis. Founding institutions will try to duplicate and distribute materials in compliance with the legal rights of their owners, but the founding institutitons shall have no liability to other institutions or other persons for their violations of such rights. Founding institutions agreed among themselves as to the geographical locations for which they will be responsible in the future. All official IDEAMA documents have been jointly agreed upon, produced and disseminated by the founding institutions. Founding institution ZKM Karlsruhe now is the official location for all IDEAMA business.

Since July 1rst, 1996 ZKM Karlsruhe is responsible for IDEAMA in total, all negotiations about any concerns will be handled by

ZKM/Zentrum fuer Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe, Lorenzstr.19,76135 Karlsruhe, Germany, Fon +49-721-8100-1700, Fax +49-721-8100-1709, e-mail joerg@zkm.de.

Founding institutions reserve the right to use the official title "IDEAMA Founding Institution."

B. Partner Institutions
Partner institutions will collaborate with the founding institutions. They may contribute materials to the basic target collection and participate in research for the catalog database. Partner institutions will be clearly named in the catalog database as the source of materials they contribute to the target collection. Partner institutions are welcome to contribute suggestions regarding the development of IDEAMA technology and acquisition of materials.

Partner institutions will house the IDEAMA target collection, catalog database and user interface as an autonomous entity integrated into their own existing in-house format. Partner institutions also have the option of obtaining updated materials. Partner institutions will be provided with these materials subject, as necessary, to reasonable fees set by the founding institutions. Partner institutions may have access to those portions of the IDEAMA database not accessible to the public, subject to a reasonable fee set by the founding institutions. All projects developed by partner institutions within the IDEAMA structure must be clearly defined and approved by the founding institution. All materials provided by partner institutions to the founding institutions must be done so in full compliance with the legal rights of the owner(s) of the material. Partner institutions may make their contributions to IDEAMA public at any time.

Partner institutions will inform the founding institutions regarding sources of funding for each IDEAMA-related project. Partner institutions reserve the right to use the title "IDEAMA Partner Institution".

C. Affiliate Institutions
Affiliate institutions can incorporate the IDEAMA target collection into their music collections in any manner they wish. They will be responsible for integrating the catalog database and user interface into their own existing format. They will have the option of subscribing to IDEAMA updates.

Affiliate institutions reserve the right to use the title "IDEAMA Affiliate Institution".

Both the partner and affiliate institutions may specify a time period for which they will function according to their particular IDEAMA branch category definitions. Should an institution wish to change its designation from "Partner Institution" to "Affiliate Institution", or from "Affiliate Institution" to "Partner Institution," it may do so by formal agreement. The designation shall be decided and agreed upon between the designated institution and one of founding institutions.

Both partner and affiliate institutions understand and agree that the founding institutions are not liable for any malfunction of the catalog database software within the existing format they use.

Both partner institutions and affiliate institutions may make all IDEAMA materials and the catalog database accessible at their institution, but they may not under any circumstances duplicate and/or distribute all or any part of the IDEAMA collection.

Both institutions agree in the goals and organisation structures of IDEAMA.
