Dennis Del Favero: Cross Currents [1999]

»Cross Currents« is the third part in Dennis Del Favero’s Yugoslavian War trilogy after »Pietà« [1994] and »Motel Vilina Vlas« [1995]. At the ZKM | Institute for Visual Media, the artist realized the work as an interactive installation and a CD-ROM.

»Cross Currents« investigates explores the new traffic in human beings, specifically the sex trade, sweeping Europe and exploiting, amongst other victims, refugees from Former Yugoslavia. These refugees, lured by fake advertisements and enticements, find themselves forced to work as prostitutes in the hotels and streets of Berlin and other European cities. In surveying this underground sexual economy the project also reveals a specific interrelationship between male and female sexuality. This intertwining exposes the secret debt paid extracted from the bodies of the women involved and the brutalization enacted on the emotional lives of the men. The project focuses on these issues through a narrative dealing with the relationship between a young mail-order bride from former Yugoslavia and her husband, who sells her into prostitution in Berlin.

In the interactive installation the viewer enters a room with a severely tilted and wedge-shaped floor. Interacting with the viewer's movements by means of a laser motion detection system is a split-screen video projection beamed onto the two intersecting walls of the room. The projection is accompanied by a synchronized sound and narrative audioscape, while fragmented items of hotel furniture emerge from the various surfaces of the space.
